How To Write a Book Proposal
If you're interested in submitting your book idea to a traditional publisher so they can review it to see if it's something they would be interested in publishing and selling on the marketplace, then the goal of acquiring an agent or even contacting an acquisitions editor is to get them to a "Yes" that would grant you permission to submit to them your book proposal.
Publishers don't accept unsolicited material, so first you have to query to get the "Yes" and if you're not sure how to query an agent or publisher check out my Video that covers Agents, EBooks and Amazon that explains how to query an agent and so much more.
Now back to the book proposal, a book proposal is an outline of about 20 or so pages that explains what your book idea will contain.
A book proposal is slightly different for fiction vs. non-fiction - in most cases for a fiction idea you will also have to include 3 sample chapters of your book; you may not have to include this with non-fiction.
With non-fiction books, you will have to include the general idea, or summary description of your book, a marketplace comparison based on similar books in the same genre and more.
The book that I read to assist me in creating a book proposal is Michael Larson's, How To Write a Book Proposal. This book is mainly for non-fiction work, but it assisted me in writing my fiction proposals as well.
If you're at the point where you're ready to write your book proposal (which is good to have even if you haven't acquired an agent or interested publisher yet - as the saying goes, "Success happens when Preparation meets Opportunity") So prepare now and write your book proposal, so that you can be ready when the opportunity presents itself.
